A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
More than a mere renaissance man, Thomas Jefferson may have actually been a new kind of man. The famed Founding Father was a lawyer, an agronomist, a musician, a scientist, a philosopher, an author, an architect, an inventor, and a statesman. He was fluent in five languages and able to read two others, and wrote over sixteen thousand letters in the course of his life. He was acquainted with nearly every influential person in America, and a great many in Europe as well. Though Jefferson never set foot outside of the American continent before adulthood, he acquired an education that rivaled the finest to be attained in Europe. Thomas Jefferson was clearly the foremost American son of the Enlightenment. Perhaps most importantly of all, though, was Jefferson’s role as the principal author of the Declaration of Independence.
After working to shape the new nation during the revolution and colonial eras, Thomas Jefferson ran for president in 1796. He lost to John Adams, once his close friend, and this made Jefferson vice president under a man whom he could no longer abide. After a single meeting, on the street, the two former allies never communicated directly with one another during the whole administration. Jefferson again ran for the presidency in 1801 and won. He served for two terms as the nation’s third president, and his experience as vice president ultimately played a deciding role in forming the character of the American presidency. The 12th Amendment to the Constitution changed the manner in which the vice president was selected, so as to prevent archenemies from occupying the first and second positions of the executive like Jefferson and Adams had endured.
