John “Doc” Holliday (August 14, 1851 - November 8, 1887) was an American gambler and gunfighter of the American Old West. The legend and mystique surrounding his life is so great that he has been mentioned in countless books and portrayed by actors in numerous movies and television shows.
At the age of 22, young Holliday--a practicing dentist at the time--was diagnosed with tuberculosis. It was this event that likely changed the course of his life forever, as shortly after the diagnosis he moved to the American Southwest in hopes the climate would prolong his life. He took up gambling as a profession and subsequently acquired a reputation as a deadly gunman. During his travels Holliday struck up a friendship with the legendary Wyatt Earp and his brothers that would last until Holliday’s death.
In 1880 Holliday moved to Tombstone, Arizona where he participated alongside the Earps in the famous OK Corral shootout. The gunfight did not settle matters between the two sides fighting, and Holliday was embroiled in ensuing shootouts and killings. He successfully fought being extradited for murder and passed away peacefully in bed at the age of 36.
