A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
The name Davy Crockett is one that can’t be heard without thoughts of the Alamo, gunfights, and incredible acts of resilience in the face of danger. Davy Crockett, born David Crockett in August 1786, is recognized as a larger-than-life hero of the 19th century in America. However, Crockett’s real life was most likely far more tame than the stories that are still heard across the country today.
Davy Crockett was a frontiersman, soldier, and eventual politician, but he became an American folk hero thanks to his pioneer nature. Nicknamed the “King of the Wild Frontier”, Crockett spent his early life in East Tennessee. He began to make a reputation for himself as a hunter and storyteller, sharing tall tales about his game and his experiences out on the frontier. Later in life, Crockett became a representative for the state of Tennessee in the House of Representatives. After facing off with President Andrew Jackson and fighting the president’s policies with vehement opposition, Crockett left Washington, D.C. and headed to Texas (then known as the Mexican state of Tejas). Out west, Davy Crockett participated in the Texas Revolution and the Battle of the Alamo — his final stand took place at the Alamo, where the frontiersman died.
During his lifetime, Crockett became famous for incredible and even unbelievable exploits popularized by stage plays and written works. After his death, he continued to be credited with brazen acts of mythical proportion. This continued into the 20th century with television and movie portrayals praising Crockett’s adventures, and he grew to become one of the most well-known folk heroes in American history. While Davy Crockett’s life may not have been as thrilling as folklore claimed, he is still one of the heroes of the American frontier.
