A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
During the years of America’s Civil War, the nation was strongly divided into two lands, two mindsets, and two battlefronts: the North and the South. As brothers fought against their own brothers, taking to the battlefield to fight for their chosen army, the conflict dragged on. Still young its in years, the United States military also became divided in two — and the Union and Confederate armies were left to devise their own uniforms and war plans.
As the Civil War waged throughout the mid-1800s, Confederate soldiers donned official uniforms in varying shades. When the first Southern men enlisted, there was no official military uniform for the Confederacy. Instead, the new soldiers wore whatever clothing they brought from home. After the first year of the war, however, the Confederate Army adopted grey as its official uniform color. All Confederate men soon switched to grey trousers, jackets, and hats. Famous Civil War figures including Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and George Pickett all proudly wore the grey of the Confederate military until 1865.
An exclusive piece in our Heritage Costumes collection of historical clothing, these Civil War military trousers are authentic to the Confederate Army attire of 19th century America in the midst of war.
