When America’s 16th president took office in March 1861, Abraham Lincoln faced immediate challenges. Seven southern states seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of American before Lincoln even set foot in the White House. As additional states seceded and war became imminent, Lincoln supervised a great deal. He led the nation through the Civil War, the bloodiest war ever to occur, as well as the moral, constitutional, and political crises that arose from the war. Abraham Lincoln became an involved Commander in Chief, issuing the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, protecting escaped slaves, and pushing the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution to pass. Lincoln was responsible for permanently outlawing slavery — and he also helped the nation overcome its bitter divisiveness — all before his devastating assassination in April 1865.

Cleaning Instructions:
