The American Revolution pitted a group of 13 small colonies against the world’s biggest superpower, an entire empire with manpower, supplies, and strategy. What were the colonists to do in the face of such a force? The Continental Army was small and new, but the French Army was sizable, skilled, and well versed in the tactics used by the British. The French Army played a crucial role in the Revolutionary War, helping the colonists win their independence from British rule.
After the young country of America declared its intent to separate from English rule, France became interested. As the American Revolution began, the French government and its citizens excitedly found hope in the colonists’ cause — France saw the war as a new type of enlightenment, one that would end English tyranny permanently. After a visit from Benjamin Franklin, who spoke before the French government, the European power and British rival decided they would send their help to America.
So, in 1775, France began sending troops for military support covertly to the colonies. Soon after French involvement began, French citizens began volunteering to fight with America and win independence. Famed soldiers like Pierre Charles L’Enfant and Marquis De Lafayette enlisted and become heroic figures of the war. With France’s help and military expertise, the U.S. was given a huge amount of help throughout the Revolutionary War. To this day, France is considered one of the biggest reasons the nation was able to beat the British.
