In its very first iteration, the American flag was simple: a circle of 13 five-pointed white stars set on a navy blue background to represent the nation’s states, with 13 alternating stripes of red and white meant to reflect each of the original Thirteen Colonies. This first flag is often referred to as the Betsy Ross flag, but the history and legend behind America’s first flag is somewhat complicated.

Born Elizabeth Griscom Ross in 1752, “Betsy” is credited in American history with making the first U.S. flag. It’s said that, when visiting with General George Washington, commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, Ross saw Washington’s sketch of what he thought could become the new nation’s flag. Ross supposedly convinced the future president to alter his sketches, changing the stars from six-pointed to five-pointed to make the design easier and more efficient to sew. During the American Revolution, Betsy Ross then sewed the design she’d helped to create for the Pennsylvania navy. Other young women throughout the colonies also sewed this first famous flag design, producing them for the Continental Army to carry onto battlefields and show off at their encampments.

However, Betsy Ross may not have been the first to sew the American flag. According to historians, the story first made its way into the American consciousness two decades after Ross’ death—her grandson made the claim that Betsy Ross “made with her hands the first flag of the United States.” Yet the only evidence that exists proves Ross was merely one of many young women who worked as a flag maker for the Continental Army during the 18th century. The story of Betsy Ross sewing that first flag did excite patriots, though, and it quickly took off. Betsy Ross became a role model for girls, a symbol of women’s contributions to U.S. history, and a hero of the colonial years.

An exclusive piece in our Heritage Costumes Patriotic collection of quality costume clothing, this Betsy Ross ladies’ colonial dress costume is authentic to the 1700s and the attire worn by the patriot and U.S. flag creator herself. You’ll look just like the famous seamstress who inspired individuals throughout the Thirteen Colonies when you don this historically accurate costume set. To capture Ross’ attire accurately, this costume includes a long velvet dress with contrasting satin jacquard and a zippered back. The bodice is fully lined with a poly/cotton broadcloth fabric for comfort and is trimmed with white lace along the neckline and bell sleeve cuffs. Also included to complete the look of Betsy Ross and traditional colonial women’s wear are a white lace-trimmed shawl and matching mob cap. You’ll look the part of a woman inspiring the colonies to come together under one flag with this costume set straight out of the 18th century.

Of course, every Betsy Ross patriotic costume needs a few accessories, too. During the Revolution, extremes of rich and plain attire in women's dress were most marked. In the large cities, especially in those occupied from time to time by the British, balls, dinners, dances, and parties kept fashion uppermost in the thoughts of the ladies.
