When Christmas comes each year, there’s a whole host of fictional characters beloved by all and revisited in holiday plays, performances, and other mediums. Yet no Christmas character is as recognizable as one grumpy old man: Ebenezer Scrooge.
Ebenezer Scrooge first appeared as the main character of Charles Dickens’ 1843 novella A Christmas Character. When the novel begins, Scrooge is a cold-hearted, tight-fisted and greedy man who despises Christmas and all that engenders happiness. Scrooge isn’t merely grumpy; he’s an unhappy miser, stuck in his despise and misery. Though Ebenezer Scrooge does learn an important lesson about the holiday spirit and the importance of kindness, the man has become a symbol of all who dislike Christmas and holiday celebrations. In fact, people today still use Scrooge’s famous “Bah, humbug!” expression to show their disgust with modern Christmas traditions or the holiday season. Even his last name, Scrooge, has come to represent miserliness and misanthropy, the traits most famous to his character. Chances are you certainly know a “Scrooge” or two every December.
