A central figure of the Crimean War, a healer unlike any other before her, and the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale is one of the biggest reformers in England’s history. Known as “the Lady with the Lamp” to the soldiers and fellow nurses she encountered during the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale served both her country and its most severely wounded throughout the 19th century, becoming a Victorian-era cultural icon—one that still persists today.
In 1854, Florence Nightingale was sent to the Selimiye Barracks in Scutari, or modern-day Istanbul. As British soldiers fought in the Crimean War, Nightingale trained volunteer nurses and educated England’s citizens about the horrific conditions found in the hospitals the wounded were taken to. On the battlefield, Nightingale discovered that the wounded weren’t being properly cared for; they were without crucial medicines, treated with poor hygiene practices, and surrounded by mass inflections. When Nightingale arrived at the barracks, the death rate was 42%. After improving hygiene practices, such as hand washing and ventilation, the death rate dropped to only 2%. Florence became a crusader for better nutrition, increased supplies, and better hospital care, saving countless lives thanks to her sanitation practices alone.
Today, Florence Nightingale is still remembered for the impact she had on modern nursing. The founder of the nursing school at St. Thomas Hospital in London (now known as King’s College), the first secular nursing school in the world, Nightingale instituted the Nightingale Pledge taken by all new nurses. The Florence Nightingale Medal is now the highest international honor awarded to nurses, honoring the famed “Lady with the Lamp” and her incredible legacy.
