While many of the names of the Revolutionary War in America are those who were colonists, patriots, Founding Fathers, and soldiers on the battlefield who fought for the new nation’s independence, many British soldiers put their own lives in danger to fight on behalf of the crown. One such man was Charles Cornwallis, later known as the 1st Marquess Cornwallis, an officer for the British Army during the American Revolution.
Born into England’s aristocracy and educated at the famed schools Eton and Cambridge, Charles Cornwallis enlisted in the British Army in 1757. He first fought in the Seven Years’ War, then took time away from the military to serve in the House of Lords. In 1776, Cornwallis headed to the 13 colonies to fight in the American War of Independence. General Cornwallis led the British Army and defeated the colonists at the Battle of Camden and Guilford Court House. Yet in 1781, after facing defeat in the Southern states and fighting with his superiors, the war was over. General Cornwallis surrendered his army at Yorktown in October.
Though Cornwallis was defeated in America, the British never thought any less of the general. He was welcomed home and continued his career in the army, serving in India and reforming the East India Company with the creation and implementation of Cornwallis Code. He is remembered for helping secure British rule in India—and his role in the Revolutionary War did bring England some victories in the larger battle.
