Classical music is a genre beloved for centuries, as the songs composed during the 1800s came to shape all music that followed. Still today, the biggest names of classical music shape both history and the music we hear today — and Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the most remembered and prominent names from the classical era. Johann Sebastian Bach became a German composer, a famed musician who had a significant influence on the Baroque period.
Bach’s name has stood the test of time, and so too has his music. Born into a a great German musical family in 1685, he began learning various instruments including the violin and harpsichord from his father at a young age. Both Bach’s father and brother guided young Johann Sebastian. The young composer chose to study music and, quite soon after graduating, held several important musical posts throughout Germany including Director of Music for Leopold, Prince of Anhalt-Kothen. He ultimately became the Royal Court Composer for Augustus III, serving in this role until his death in 1750.
Johann Sebastian Bach is praised today for enriching established German styles of music, mastering counterpoint, harmonic, and motivic organization. Bach adapted rhythms, forms, and textures from around the world, using Italy and France as his primary inspiration. Ultimately, Bach composed over 300 cantatas, the Brandenburg Concertos, the Goldberg Variations, and other incredible classics. Though the work of Johann Sebastian Bach is widely respected today, during the composer’s lifetime he wasn’t recognized until the 19th century — but today, he’s given the title of one of the greatest composers of all time.
