Classical music is a genre beloved for centuries, as the songs composed during the 1800s came to shape all music that followed. Still today, the biggest names of classical music shape both history and the music we hear today — and Ludwig Van Beethoven is one of the most remembered and prominent names from the classical era. Ludwig Van Beethoven became a German composer, a famed musician who played a crucial role in the musical transition between the Classical and Romantic eras.

Born the second-oldest child of his family in 1770, Beethoven was immediately expected to become a musician. In fact, his father Johann Van Beethoven (a singer and court musician himself) expected so much of his son that young Ludwig Van Beethoven was drilled daily in the hopes of becoming a child prodigy. That pressure and practice did pay off, as Beethoven gave his first public performance as a pianist at age eight. By age 11, Beethoven was training with famed court musicians in Bonn. Just 10 years later, Ludwig Van Beethoven left his musical education for Vienna, where he would study under Mozart himself.

Ludwig Van Beethoven is praised today as one of the most famous and influential composers in all of music history. Beethoven created a library of incredible compositions that includes nine symphonies, five piano concertos, one violin concerto, 32 piano sonatas, 16 string quartets, and even a mass and an opera. Ultimately, however, Beethoven was forced to give up conducting and performing in public in the later years of his life. In his late 20s, Beethoven began to lose his hearing, and he was almost completely deaf by the end of his life in the early 1800s. Still, though, Beethoven composed music for another 15 years — and many of his most admired and respected works were created during the years of his hearing loss.
