A Heritage Costumes Exclusive

Many a Roman emperor earned prestige within the annals of history. Rome’s greatest emperors designed governments that would be emulated for centuries to come, fought wars that are still analyzed today, and began modernizing the world one city-state at a time. One of the best-known Roman emperors was Marcus Aurelius. A philosopher, legal student, military veteran, and leader of the entire emperor, Marcus Aurelius was a leader in many ways. Today, he’s remembered as the emperor who ushered in the Golden Age of the Roman Empire — but becoming a historic emperor was never his plan.

Marcus Aurelius was born destined for greatness within the Roman Empire. Despite his known social standing, historians still don’t know how exactly Aurelius took control of the throne. Emperor Hadrian announced his successor in 136 — but he named a man known as Lucius Ceionius Commodus, not Aurelius. Yet just two years later, Aurelius was preparing to become emperor as an apprentice to Antonius Pius. As an apprentice, Marcus Aurelius studied government, learned languages, developed his interest in philosophy, and began assuming a more public role in Rome.

Finally, when Antonius died, Marcus Aurelius stepped into the role of emperor. Though he wasn’t destined for this throne from birth, good luck led him to it. Immediately his reign became filled with crises to attend to — frontier wars broke out, along with a plague, and judicial problems appeared. Aurelius began revamping Rome’s civil law, lessening the harsh penalties for slaves and widows. He made a distinction between civil law and criminal law, creating two separate classes of punishments for different crimes. On top of his role as emperor, Aurelius began writing philosophical texts, delving into disown political thoughts and the morality of his decisions. All of his thoughts were collected into a work known as the Meditations. Considered one of the great books of history, the Meditations covered important concepts from Stoicism to Platonism to Neoplatonism.

Despite ongoing wars in what’s today known as Germany, Marcus Aurelius continued to bring the Roman Empire together by traveling throughout its territories and forging connections between all of the different peoples and cultures. By 177 he was ready to prepare the next emperor and named his 16 year old son his joint emperor. Together, the two ruled Rome until 180, when Marcus Aurelius died at his military headquarters.
