The figures of the Bible have many lessons to teach, and each one teaches in his own unique way. However, alongside the important teachings of Jesus and the apostles are the men of the Old Testament who introduced lessons that, though they were for those living in ancient times, are still important today. The story and life of Moses, also known as Moses the Prophet or Moses the Teacher, is one of the most important of the Old Testament.
Orphaned after birth and found by an Egyptian princess, Moses the Prophet began his life with unexpected good fortune. The Book of Exodus tells the story of how Moses, an Israelite, was originally ordered to be killed by the Egyptian Pharaoh. However, the infant boy escaped this awful fate and was welcomed into the palace by the Pharaoh’s daughter and raised as an Egyptian royal. From his position of good favor, Moses spoke up for his people as he grew older. God spoke directly to Moses through angels and a burning bush, asking Moses to help set the Israelites free from slavery and persecution in Egypt. After God unleashed the Ten Plagues on the Egyptian people, Moses was able to lead the Israelites out of Egypt by parting the Red Sea and towards the Promised Land. Along the way, Moses received the all-important Ten Commandments from God upon Mount Sinai, which dictate the most important laws for all today. Unfortunately, Moses himself never reached the Promised Land, eventually dying within sight of it before he and his people crossed its borders.
Today, Moses is an important figure in nearly every religion. He is considered the author of the Torah and the most important prophet in Judaism, is one of the most important biblical figures in Christianity, and is a storied and revered prophet in Islam, Bahai, and other religions.
