The stories of Greek mythology are epic and incredible, full of adventure and lore that shaped Ancient Greece. While the figures of Greek mythology are imagined, their stories have come to life for millennia to teach lessons, tell tall tales, and carry messages. One Greek hero in particular, Odysseus, is both myth and historic story, god and traveler of the mortal world. Odysseus’ story, first told in Homer’s much-studied poems the Odyssey and the Iliad, is an epic tale beloved by those who enjoy mythology and those who love a great adventure story.
Odysseus is legendary — in Greek mythology, he’s king of Ithaca and in Homer’s writing, he’s an ingenious hero. It’s written that Odysseus first became an influential figure during the Trojan War. A strategist and advisor for the Greeks, Odysseus encouraged Agamemnon to fight rather than back down and was the one who devised the Trojan Horse, the “gift” that allowed Agamemnon’s forces to defeat Troy. After the Greek warriors were victorious, Odysseus is ready to head home to Ithaca. Homer’s Odyssey describes the 10 year journey it took for Odysseus to make it back to his kingdom.
Filled with epic adventures, mythical creatures, and a host of challenges that seem insurmountable, the Odyssey describes Odysseus’ encounters with Greek mythology’s best-known gods and creatures. From an almost deadly visit to the Cyclops to a rough journey overseas caused by Poseidon to a helping hand from Aeolus to a deadly experience with cannibal tribes and a brief fling with Circe to the appearance of Helios and Zeus, there’s truly no journey as difficult or as unexpected as Odysseus’ travels home. Still today, readers in Greece and around the world turn to the stories of Odysseus’ wartime feats and journeys for entertainment and important lessons.
