Though many women have made history in the world of aviation, only one woman is remembered above all others: Amelia Earhart. Her life as one of the very first female pilots fascinates to this day, and her shocking, mysterious disappearance still has historians searching for answers to learn more about her. A record setting pilot, political activist, aviation pioneer, and best-selling author, Amelia Earhart changed the world in the sky and on the ground.

Born in 1897, Amelia Earhart lived a brief but incredible life. A tomboy from childhood, Earhart was always interested in being outdoors. But it wasn’t until she flew with a pilot in 1920 that she considered aviation — her very first plane flight changed the course of her life. Instead of pursuing the traditional path she was on at Columbia University, Earhart changed course and began learning how to fly planes. In 1927, after Charles Lindbergh successfully flew across the Atlantic Ocean alone, Earhart was approached by Captain Hilton R. Railey who asked if she’d like to attempt to replicate Lindbergh’s feat. She said yes, but soon realized she had no idea how to fly the plane in question; the instruments were too different.

That didn’t stop Earhart. She rode across the Atlantic as a passenger in 1928, but became determined to fly the route herself. In May 1932, she did exactly that: Amelia Earhart took off from Newfoundland and landed in Ireland 14 hours later. She became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean alone, receiving awards from the U.S. Congress, French government, and National Geographic Society for her accomplishment. Earhart enjoyed a new life in the political world as a result, becoming good friends with Eleanor Roosevelt and giving her support to women’s causes like the Equal Rights Amendment.

Everything was going well for the famed female pilot. So, in 1937 Amelia Earhart decided to tackle another incredible feat: to circumnavigate the globe. Yet everything changed when mid-flight Earhart and her navigator Frank Noonan lost radio signal, began running low on gas, and couldn’t follow their planned route. Earhart, Noonan, and the Lockheed Model 10-E Electra plane they were flying all disappeared over the Pacific Ocean. Decade later, little evidence of what exactly happened exists, leaving Amelia Earhart’s legacy shrouded in mystery at just 40 years old.
