During the 18th century, France underwent a new kind of revolution: a revolution of thinking and culture. When the 1700s began, so too did France’s Enlightenment period, a century of reason-based thinking and a shift away from authority. Instead of drawing inspiration from the monarchy, the French people began to take their cultural cues from Paris and the new bourgeoisie class. With salons and cafes taking the place of royal palaces and balls, the Enlightenment brought new art and new fashion that everyone, from royalty to the lowest classes, adopted.

At the same time, Louis XIV, also known as the Sun King who held court at Versailles, rose to power. Louis XIV certainly cared about the cultural changes happening thanks to the Enlightenment, but he also wanted to create an era that defined his rule — and the Classical Baroque period came to life. Defined by excess and luxury, the Baroque style shaped art, architecture, music, and fashion. Everything was luxurious, crafted out of gold, ribbons, lace, and gemstones. Most importantly, French fashion began more adaptable. For the first time, people of any status or class could mix and match clothing, dressing for both style and the seasonal weather.

Once Louis XIV created the role of fashion designers — known as certified dress makers during the Baroque period — the era’s style took off. While women wore the most exquisite designs of the period, men too began to adopt more dramatic and fashion-forward attire. Gone were the restrained styles of the Renaissance. In their place, Baroque men donned high waisted pants, wide lace collars, and lace shirt cuffs. Accessories became more fashionable, with men’s shoes turning into knee-high boots and square-toed heeled versions. Most importantly, though, was a man’s outerwear: no Baroque man dared to step outside without either a cape draped over his shoulder or a frock coat worn atop his lacy shirt. The frock coat was no normal overcoat, though — during the Baroque era in France, the frock coat was daring, colorful, and decorated with trim, ribbon, and exquisite detailing.
