A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.

You most likely have never heard the name Charles Earl Boles — but you’ve probably heard of Black Bart. While Black Bart is one of America’s most notorious outlaws during the Victorian and Wild West eras, the famed criminal wasn’t born with his ominous moniker. Rather, he was named Charles Earl Boles. Boles lived quite the life during the 1800s. Born in England in 1829, Boles came to the United States with his family. However, Charles Earl Boles wasn’t satisfied living a quiet life. The future outlaw headed out to California during the 1849 Gold Rush, prospecting for gold along the Sacramento River. When the Civil War broke out during the 1860s, Boles enlisted with the Union Army and participated in momentous events like the Battle of Vicksburg and Sherman’s March to the Sea.

Yet once the Civil War ended, Boles didn’t return home to his family. Instead, he embarked on a life of crime and adopted a new name: Black Bart. Between 1875 and 1883 Black Bart conducted 28 different stagecoach robberies. He quickly became both notorious and famous, leaving behind poems at the sites of some robberies as a signature. Black Bart was polite, too, never firing a weapon during any of his robberies and refusing to use foul language. This gentlemanly behavior quickly made him one of the most talked about outlaws in the 19th century. Though no stagecoach traveling through California or Oregon was safe from his robbery, Black Bart was always a kind, polite criminal.

An exclusive piece in our Heritage Costumes Famous People collection of quality costume clothing, this children’s Black Bart costume is authentic to England’s Victorian era and the attire won by Black Bart himself. You’ll look every bit gentleman and outlaw yourself with this accurate and detailed Black Bart costume.
