The British Red Coats were the enemy of the Revolutionary War, the invading force arriving to stomp out the colonists’ rebellion and to keep the colonies for King George. The Red Coats had roamed the streets of cities in each of the 13 colonies for years, imposing British laws and taxes while also sparring with colonists during the tense American Revolution period. Ever since the years of the Revolutionary War, the term “Red Coats” has remained associated with those British soldiers who fought against the colonists, and the British still wear that bright red of the revolution.
Instead of referring to the British military by its formal name, colonists called the men Red Coats because of their uniforms. From the 1600s to the 1900s, the British Army dressed its soldiers in in a red coat or coatee. Every man, no matter his rank, wore the incredibly bright shade of red. Although the color certainly stood out on the battlefield, it wasn’t as foolhardy a choice as some may have thought. During the years of the American Revolution, the weapon of choice was the musket filled with black powder. With every shot fired, the battlefield was enveloped in black smoke—making it impossible to see your fellow soldiers or the red coats of the British.
An exclusive piece in our Heritage Costumes collection of quality costume clothing, this children’s British Red Coat uniform costume is authentic to the 1700s and the attire worn by the British soldiers during the Revolutionary War. You’ll look just like the enemy when you don this historically accurate costume set. To capture the British Red Coat attire accurately, this costume includes a red colonial frock coat (a colonial military jacket) with contrasting navy blue collar, a military waistcoat (or vest), a lace-trimmed jabot, a pair of colonial military breeches, and lace cuffs. You’ll look the part of a British soldier in the Revolutionary War with this costume set straight out of the 18th century.
Of course, every British Red Coat wartime costume needs a few accessories, too. No British man during the 18th century took to America’s battlefields without his tricorner hat, tall black boot spats, colonial wig, and military sword. If you’d like to enhance your British Red Coat uniform with our Heritage Costume accessories (which are not included with the purchase of this costume), you can pair this costume outfit with these options from our wide selection of added details to create your very own personalized costume.
This high-quality British Red Coat adult costume can be used for a period ball, historical reenactment, masquerade, or simply a fun day of pretending to be a soldier fighting for the crown during the 18th century Revolutionary War era.
