A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
Former U.S. President Andrew Jackson is, of course, remembered for his two terms as the leader of the nation. Yet the seventh President also earned a reputation for being an incredibly unique leader, one who aimed to represent the common man rather than the wealthy. Jackson is also the man responsible for founding the Democratic Party, an institution still popular today. As president, Jackson sought to advance the rights of the "common man" against a "corrupt aristocracy,” a new concept during the 1800s.
Born in 1767 to a common family, Andrew Jackson worked his way up to the presidency with much dedication and education. He first became a practicing lawyer in Tennessee, then served terms in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. In 1798, Jackson was appointed to the role of a justice on the Tennessee Supreme Court and served until 1804. Though Jackson tried to retire from public service, he was appointed colonel of the Tennessee militia and elected commander in 1802. So, Andrew Jackson stepped back into the spotlight, leading Tennessee during the Creek War, the War of 1812, and the Seminole War.
In 1824 Andrew Jackson ran for president and lost to John Quincy Adams. In 1828, Jackson again ran as the first candidate for the brand-new Democratic Party and won in a landslide. During his two terms as President from 1829 to 1837, Jackson put down South Carolina’s attempted secession, dismantled the Second Bank of the United States, and completely paid off the national debt for the very first time. Jackson also signed the Indian Removal Act, relocating Native American tribes to the South and leaving behind a trail of death and sickness, and recognized the Republic of Texas, setting Texas on the path to statehood.
Andrew Jackson’s actions as president were highly regarded and widely welcomed during the 19th century, and he is still considered among the top 10 most successful presidents in U.S. history thanks to all he did.
