A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
A classic villain who aimed to rule the streets of New York City with his vicious and violent gang, William Poole took 19th-century politics into his own hands. Nicknamed Bill the Butcher, the man formerly known as William Poole was born in New Jersey to English parents. In 1832 the Poole family moved to New York City, where they opened a butcher shop in Manhattan. Young William intended to follow in his father’s footsteps and trained as a butcher, too, eventually taking charge of the family business.
Yet Poole’s life changed course in the 1840s when he began his first gang: the Washington Street Gang. Over the years that followed, Poole became a well-known gang leader who was always involved in physical conflicts like fights and brawls. Known on the streets as Bill the Butcher, he founded the Bowery Boys and butted heads with other gang leaders. His biggest rival was John Morrissey, an Irish immigrant, and enforcer for Tammany Hall. Bill the Butcher and Morrissey were constantly at war, especially when money was involved—and it was Morrissey who killed Bill the Butcher when two of his men shot Morrissey’s enemy in 1855.
Bill the Butcher didn’t fade into anonymity, though. In his death, his life became even more thrilling as the stories of his confrontations and gang grew increasingly popular. Bill the Butcher inspired a character in the 2002 film Gangs of New York and appears as a character in a number of popular historical novels. His gang and his brutal battles live on still today.
