A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
The Three Kings, or the Three Wise Men, are a centerpiece of the biblical story surrounding the birth of Jesus. These Wise Men, more specifically known as Magi, travel a great distance to Bethlehem to see the much-discussed infant born to the world and foretold to them.
The Magi, or kings, are regular figures in accounts of the nativity and in celebration of Christmas. The Bible speaks of Wise Men rather than monarchs, and historians say they were likely astrologists or magicians. This group of men stood for the Three Ages of Man and for the different human temperaments, and thus they have since acquired a universal character representing all humanity. Coming from the East, the three Magi followed a mysterious wandering star, the star of Bethlehem, which led them directly to Jesus’ birth site in Bethlehem. There, they knelt at the crib of the infant Christ and bore him precious gifts from their homelands to welcome him.
After visiting Jesus and seeing the infant savior for themselves, Melchior and his fellow Magi Gaspar and Balthazar met up once more in 54 AD to celebrate Christmas one last time before their deaths. Today, the Wise Men are remembered for their celebration of Jesus upon his birth.
