A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
The name Buffalo Bill is synonymous with the West, the rough and tumble days out on America’s newest frontier during the 1800s. Western heroes, sharpshooters, and outlaws alike all knew Buffalo Bill, a man of many different skills and tall tales—but what made Buffalo Bill a fixture in the West and colorful figure in history was his internationally renowned stage show, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West. It was Buffalo Bill’s show that spread the adventures of frontiersmen, western rebels, and the traditional cowboys and Indians across the U.S. and to foreign shores.
Buffalo Bill’s unique story began in 1846 in Le Claire, Iowa Territory as William Frederick Cody. At age 11, Cody took on his first job; he then became a rider for the Pony Express at just 14 years old. Too young to fight with the Union Army during the Civil War, Cody instead helped the war effort. He did eventually enlist in the U.S. Army officially, earning the prestigious Medal of Honor in 1872. The western hero formerly called Cody then earn the name “Buffalo Bill” thanks to hunter William Comstock. The men agreed that whoever shot the most buffalo would earn the name Buffalo Bill. Cody shot 68, Comstock shot 48, and the rest became history.
As the years wore on, the newly minted Buffalo Bill entered a new venture: western stage shows. He founded the Buffalo Bill Combination in 1874, touring the western prairies for ten years. Buffalo Bill then founded a new touring company in 1883, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West, which toured each year through the U.S. and Europe with heroes of the Old West like sharpshooters Annie Oakley and Frank Butler, reenacting adventures of the Pony Express, Indian attacks, and stagecoach robberies.
