Though the Bible tells the story of salvation and forgiveness through the life of Jesus Christ, there are many other important figures whose lives made an impact on Christianity and the world. From faithful followers to exemplary people, the Bible is filled with the stories of individuals who still serve as important examples today.
Ancient history and the stories of biblical times are filled with the names of brave and famous men. Yet women made an impact too, often serving as examples of strength and faith. Many know the names of each of Jesus’ 12 male disciplines, but history at times overlooks the woman at his side. Mary Magdalene was one such strong woman, learning from and accompanying Jesus during many events throughout the New Testament. A Jewish woman who traveled with the disciples, Mary Magdalene is Jesus’ only known — and named — female follower in the Bible.
Mary Magdalene was more than a disciple, though. Though many of Jesus’ followers go unnamed, Mary Magdalene is always pinpointed as important within the crowd. In the Gospels of the Bible, Mary Magdalene witnesses all of Jesus’ crucifixion, burial, and resurrection, playing a prominent role in the Easter story. All four Gospel books, from Matthew to John, mention Mary Magdalene visiting the empty tomb two days after Jesus’ death. She was the first person to testify that Jesus had risen, and she was the first person to actually see Jesus himself after the resurrection. Though the Bible reports that many of the disciples did not believe her, Mary Magdalene persisted and told the story of what she witnessed at the tomb.
Today, Mary Magdalene is not forgotten. She is an important figure both during and after Jesus’ resurrection, and though periods of history have treated her as a lesser woman, Mary Magdalene is revered as a saint by the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran churches of Christianity.
