A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.

James Longstreet is a hero of the South, one of the strongest leaders in the Confederate Army and Robert E. Lee’s closest subordinate. Yet he is often considered one of the biggest reasons the Confederacy lost the Civil War—and his reputation has long been damaged in the South until recently.

When the Civil War broke out, James Longstreet was part of the Confederate Army. He was General Robert E. Lee’s principal subordinate or the second in command of the South’s military. Throughout the war and its many battles, Longstreet was Lee’s corps commander. Longstreet was a talented military man; historians call him the best corps commander of the entire Civil War, both the Union and the Confederacy. It was his strategy, his contributions that led to Confederate victories at battles such as Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, and Chickamauga. He was present at the Seven Days Battles, the Battle of Antietam, and found himself seriously wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness.

Unfortunately for Longstreet, his command took a turn for the worse during the Knoxville Campaign. It was Longstreet’s orders and plans that directly led to a Confederate loss—and things only got worse at the Battle of Gettysburg. James Longstreet’s involvement in Gettysburg is considered his most controversial moment during the Civil War. He openly fought with General Robert E. Lee, disagreeing over the Confederate Army’s planned tactics and reluctantly supervising the disastrous assault that would become Pickett’s Charge. Gettysburg was a turning point in James Longstreet’s military career and for his legacy in the South, but none can dispute his heroism nor his strong aptitude for commanding the Confederacy.
