A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.

The individuals who made their mark in America and our nation’s Black History are filled with bravery, with courage, with determination unlike any other. Some, like Mary Elizabeth Bowser, chose to defy the slaveowners and even their own masters in the South by supporting and aiding the Union during the Civil War. Though she was born into slavery in Richmond, Virginia in 1846, Mary Elizabeth Bowser spied on the Confederates and risked her life to help the Union’s cause.

Little is known or recorded about Bowser’s early life. Yet what is known is that Bowser received some benefits denied to the average slave during the 1800s—she was baptized at her master’s family church rather than a slaves-only church, and was sent to attend school in the north. Upon returning home, Mary Bowser married Wilson Bowser, and just four days later the Civil War began with Confederate troops attacking Fort Sumter.

Fortune struck again for Mary Elizabeth Bowser. Her master’s daughter, Elizabeth Van Lew, was a rare abolitionist living in Virginia. When the Civil War began, Elizabeth turned against her home state and began to secretly support the Union in the north by organizing an underground spy ring. Bowser became an important member of that spy ring. Mary Elizabeth Bowser became a servant to Confederate President Jefferson Davis’s family in the southern White House and was able to send crucial information throughout the group, passing those details all the way up to Union military leaders like Alfred Terry, Edward Ord, and Colonel S. H. Roberts. Countless benefits came to the Union thanks to Bowser’s work, and famed Generals Benjamin Butler, George H. Sharpe, and Ulysses S. Grant have written praises of the value of the intelligence collected by Mary Elizabeth Bowser.
