Women were patriots, revolutionaries, and strong opponents of the British monarchy during the years of the American Revolution. Yet when war broke out and the men of the Thirteen Colonies took to the battlefield, the women didn’t follow—or, it was assumed that women didn’t follow. They did, though, helping their brand new nation within the ranks of the men of the Continental Army. One of those brave women was Nancy Morgan Hart, a rebel heroine who turned her frontier knowledge into victory in Georgia’s backcountry.

Nancy Morgan Hart was a true rebel. She was tough and resourceful, full of dislike for Tory soldiers and the British monarchy and a strong supporter of the American Revolution. Though many of the Revolutionary War’s battles were fought in the Thirteen Colonies, newer territories like Georgia were crucial battlefields. Fortunately, they were protected by one tough woman. In what’s thought to be Nancy Morgan Hart’s first encounter with a group of British soldiers, the men demanded that Hart cook food for them. She agreed, but when the soldiers entered her cabin, she sneakily hid their guns as they ate their meal. Once the soldiers were well fed, Nancy Morgan Hart grabbed one of those gun and held the men captive—and she shot and killed two simply for attempting to disobey her orders. Once Hart’s husband arrived home, the two patriots hung the soldiers from a nearby tree.

In another historic instance, Nancy Morgan Hart was forced off her horse by a band of British Tory soldiers. She brushed off the incident and appeared to be unaffected by it, but she did enact revenge. Nancy grabbed her gun and acted as a sniper, shooting each one of the Tories as they crossed a nearby river. Stories of her incredible bravery such as these are constant during the years of the revolution; from throwing ladles of boiling lye at spying British soldiers to dressing as a man to enter Tory camps and spy on behalf of America, Nancy Morgan Hart was a valuable force on her own that helped fight off the threat of limited freedoms and no democracy.
