Living in a new land during America’s colonial years was entirely different than living in refined and fashionable England. Instead of walking city streets and working a traditional job, the men who headed to America spent their days out in the field, fighting revolutions, and working hard. And no true colonist could tackle his day in a suit — but these colonial men still wanted a sense of style out in the newest colonies.

During the 18th century, men’s clothing saw a significant shift in the original 13 colonies. Though they adopted the styles popular across the Atlantic, wearing items similar to the men of England, American colonists needed clothing that wasn’t so constricting or as formal as the attire patterned after England’s top styles. So, colonial men of the 1700s stuck to the basics, building the colonies’ clothing to suit the new environment and the current trends of Europe.

Every man’s colonial-era outfit began with a simple white shirt that covered the body from neck to knee. The long sleeved shirt was considered a man’s undergarment, a foundational piece worn under more decorative pieces. A man’s colonial shirt was typically made from fine or coarse white linen. Men of high class status decorated their shirts with lace ruffles, or ruffs, at the wrists and neck. Men in laboring families sometimes wore linen shirts patterned with small checks or stripes. No matter their class, colonial men all shared the common attire of a plain white shirt in the years of the 1700s.

An exclusive piece in our Heritage Costumes collection of historical clothing, this men’s colonial shirt is authentic to the fashion and style of 18th century America. This full-sleeve shirt is ideal for colonial inspired events, featuring a white poly/cotton blend with a collar, frilled design down the front, and lace cuffs for a truly historic colonial look. Pair this colonial shirt with our other 18th century costume pieces and accessories to create a personalized look straight from the 1700s.

This high-quality costume can be used for a period ball, historical reenactment, masquerade, or simply experiencing a day in the life of an 18th century colonial man. Made with pride and care right in the United States, this men’s colonial shirt is built to last.
