Who hasn’t wanted to be a pirate for a day? Pirates, sometimes referred to as buccaneers, are some of history’s most exciting characters, telling thrilling swashbuckling tales of life at sea and adventures searching for treasures around the world. While pirates’ lives might seem like more of the stuff of legends rather than true tales, pirates actually did play a role in history during the 1700s — and they got their memorable style from some of America’s Founding Fathers.
When pirates roamed the seas during the 18th century, they sought both treasure and fame. Some pirates attacked ships traveling from Europe to the Americas, while others controlled trade routes throughout the world. From Captain Hook in the famed tales of Peter Pan to the life of naval expert Sir Henry Morgan (better known today as Captain Morgan), it was during the colonial era that these brave buccaneers took off, becoming both storied and historic. But pirates weren’t only known for their exploits. They also became something of a fashion icon.
Who can forget that iconic pirate look? A tricorner hat atop the captain’s head, long, curly locks that wave in the ocean’s wind, ornately buttoned coats worn over white shirts with ruffles down the front and long, lacy cuffs. All of these stylish additions came straight from the styles of the colonial period of the 1700s. The average pirate wore that famed tricorner hat — just like George Washington wore — along with a suit that consisted of a coat, a vest, a ruffled shirt, and a pair of breeches. Every pirate’s shirt was baggy, decorated with ruffles and extra fabric to mimic the style of the aristocrats and the elite of the time period. Though they were often merely common men, pirates certainly took their fashion cues from the best of the best.
