A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.

All revolutions come with casualties, as many lose their lives fighting for their freedom, their independence, their values. During the Revolutionary War, the Thirteen Colonies knew that losses would come — and the first occurred not on the battlefield, but in the streets of Boston, Massachusetts. In 1770, Crispus Attucks became the first casualty of the American Revolution. Crispus Attucks was shot and killed in the Boston Massacre, a skirmish between the colonists and British forces.

Although Crispus Attucks earned a place in history after his death in the Boston Massacre, little else beyond his name and his death is known. Attucks was born in 1723 to African parents, the second child in a family of three. His family history is uncertain; some believe that Crispus Attucks’ father was Prince Yonger, an African-born slave, and his mother was a Natick Native American. Other sources, however, believe that Attucks himself was a Native American slave, or perhaps an escaped slave. Still others think that Attucks could have been a merchant seaman or dockworker in Boston’s port. No matter his history or his origins, Crispus Attucks became a symbol of the American Revolution as the first colonist to lose his life thanks to battles with the British. Later, he became an icon of the anti-slavery movement in the 19th century, held up by others in the 1800s as the first martyr of the Revolutionary War.

An exclusive piece in our Heritage Costumes Patriotic collection of quality costume clothing based on the Founding Fathers and other renowned American patriots, this children’s Crispus Attucks costume is authentic to the 1700s and the attire worn by the American citizen during the revolution and colonial era. You’ll look just like the famous man himself when you don this historically accurate costume set. Included is a fully lined brown colonial frock coat (also known as a colonial jacket), a brown vest (or colonial waistcoat), a pair of matching colonial breeches, and lace cuffs with a lace jabot. When you take to the battlefield as one of the first Continental Army soldiers, you’re sure to look the part.

Of course, every colonial man invested in the revolution dressed in this Crispus Attucks costume needs a few accessories, too.
