While America’s earliest First Ladies all set the tone for the future wives of presidents, one in particular had a huge impact on the role of the First Lady: Dolley Madison. As the wife of James Madison, the fourth president of the United States, Dolley Madison made her mark on the new nation throughout the 1800s. During her White House tenure as First Lady from 1809 to 1817, Madison was celebrated for her impeccable social graces. She was responsible for making her husband a more popular president, as the people of America adored Dolley greatly.
Dolley Madison actually served as First Lady before her husband took office in the 19th century. Though James Madison had retired from political in 1797, he agreed to serve as Thomas Jefferson’s Secretary of State during the third president’s term. After the death of Thomas Jefferson’s wife, Madison filled in and accompanied the widowed Jefferson while he was still president. Dolley acted as hostess and companion for many of Jefferson’s official ceremonial events. She was responsible for furnishing and decorating the newly completed White House. So, when James Madison became Jefferson’s successor and the next president, Dolley was already well equipped for the role of First Lady.
Although Dolley Madison made history for her role as Madison’s wife and a gracious White House hostess, she is perhaps best remembered for her critical influence during the War of 1812. When the British arrived in Washington, D.C. and set fire to the city, the White House was under siege—yet before she fled to safety, Dolley Madison saved a painting of George Washington that still hangs in the halls of the White House today. Her act made her even more beloved by the public, a national heroine in everyone’s eyes.
