Frederick Douglass was one of the foremost leaders of the abolitionist movement during the 19th century, fighting to end slavery within the United States in the decades prior to the Civil War. Yet before he became a famed abolitionist fighting on behalf of his community, Douglass himself endured years in slavery. He attempted to escape a number of times, and finally achieved success and his freedom in September 1838 by boarding a train headed north. Within 24 hours, Frederick Douglass had achieved the freedom he’d sought for years.

Once free, Douglass connected with William Lloyd Garrison, abolitionist and author of The Liberator. Garrison discovered that Douglass was a brilliant speaker, and Douglass was asked by the American Anti-Slavery Society to engage in a tour of lectures, and so became recognized as one of America's first great black speakers. He won worldwide recognition when his autobiography was publicized in 1845. Two years later he began publishing an antislavery paper called the North Star, speaking out against the institution of slavery in the South. In addition to his vocal fight to end slavery, Douglass served as an adviser to President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War and fought for the adoption of constitutional amendments that guaranteed voting rights and other civil liberties for blacks. Frederick Douglass provided a powerful voice for human rights during this period of American history and is still revered today for his contributions against racial injustice.
