A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
In Victorian England, a cloak or cape was a necessity for women and girls alike. On the foggiest of mornings and in the chill of evenings, a cloak kept a woman cozy and protected from the elements, covering her head with a hood and dropping to her ankles for total warmth. Yet a girl’s Victorian cloak wasn’t a boring piece of outwear — the cloak was both chic and exquisitely made. Crafted from fabrics like wool, satin, silk, velvet, and pleated chiffon, the cloaks of England’s Victorian era during the 19th century were meant to be seen.
An exclusive piece in our American Heritage collection of historical costume accessories, this girls’ Victorian cloak is authentic to those worn on foggy, damp London days. The cloak, or cape, is representative of the pieces worn by women who needed to keep warm with style during the 1800s. Your red Victorian cloak is crafted from crushed panne velvet, featuring an attached hood trimmed in faux fur. The elegant cape ties closed at the neck for easy wear.
Meant to be a complement to our many 19th century pieces, you can mix and match the red fur-trimmed cape to any piece of your choosing. This add-on accessory fits children as well as adults (up to a size medium), making the cloak a perfect piece for both children and adults seeking a realistic Victorian-era look. Add this cape to one of our Victorian costumes for a perfectly authentic outfit suitable for any day or night out on the town in London’s chilly weather.
This adaptable accessory can be used for school events, history lessons, or simply a fun day of experiencing life as a 19th century woman. If you’re heading out to meet friends or visit town like the women and girls of the past, this Victorian cloak with fur trim will keep you warm. Made with pride and care right in the United States, this cape is built to last.
Fashion history shows that women are forever changing their minds about long versus and short and it was the same with cloaks. Along with longer versions, shorter cloaks were in vogue from 1850 and were ideal cover ups for wearing over the wider crinoline dress styles.
