The murders of Jack the Ripper have never been solved—and still today, experts have no idea who, exactly, Jack the Ripper was during the 19th century. Jack the Ripper is one of the most famous villains in history, the serial killer who still evades law enforcement. During the late 1800s, an anonymous man ran rampant through the impoverished areas of London’s Whitechapel district, murdering as many as 11 individuals between 1888 and 1891. The serial killer followed a clear pattern with every murder: he chose female prostitutes who lived and worked in East London slums, cutting their throats and mutilating their stomachs. Sometimes, the killer removed the victims’ internal organs.
Jack the Ripper first became a known name when an anonymous letter by someone claiming to be the murderer wrote a letter to journalists. Some believe that letter was nothing more than a hoax created by a journalist; others believe it was a true clue from the serial killer. Before this letter, the killer was referred to as “the Whitechapel Murderer” and “Leather Apron” by both the police and the media. As media coverage of Jack the Ripper grew, the London public solidified the killer as a legend. That legend spread internationally, gaining ever more notoriety when the murders were never solved.
