A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
John Adams is a name signed at the bottom of our Constitution, but his role as a Founding Father and patriot was as great as the accomplishments of military leaders, politicians, and revolutionaries worldwide. Adams was more than just a member of the first Congress — he became an active member engaged with as many as 90 different committees, chairing 25 of those committees during the second Continental Congress. In May of 1776, he introduced a resolution that amounted to a declaration of independence from Great Britain, setting the foundation for what would officially become the Declaration of Independence sent to the king by the Founding Fathers. Adams then shortly thereafter became a fierce advocate for the official Declaration drafted by Thomas Jefferson.
Yet his political career didn’t end with the formation of the Constitution. Adams the revolutionary authored the constitution of Massachusetts and became a diplomat who fostered U.S. relations with Europe. John Adams then became the United States’ first vice president, serving under George Washington. He then became president in his own right, securing his role in history as the second president to ever lead the nation and the first to live in the White House. He earned himself the nickname “the father of the American Navy” while in office.
Once out of office, Adams raised an entire family of dedicated American politicians, becoming the father of John Quincy Adams, the sixth president. John Adams died on July 4, 1826 on a day befitting America’s patriots and, incidentally, within hours of the death of Thomas Jefferson on the very same day. His final toast to the Fourth of July was "Independence Forever!”
