A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
When the colonists forged a new life on the shores of America, they became fiercely independent and determined to make their new home one of their very own—and some, like John Paul Jones, took to the battlefields of the Revolutionary War to defend their country. Every colonist was a revolutionary in some way, and John Paul Jones became one of the biggest names of the American Revolution when he became the first naval commander of the United States. Nicknamed the “Father of the American Navy,” Jones stood against England in British waters, earning an international reputation as an incredible naval leader.
Born in Scotland in 1742, John Paul Jones took to the sea at a young age. At 13 years old, Jones was already a skilled sailor; by age 21, he was captain of his own ship and sailed back and forth from the West Indies to England. However, his dedication to England ended when the American Revolution broke out—John Paul Jones turned into a revolutionary, joining the Continental Army’s new navy and successfully fighting the British in international waters. When the French joined the Revolutionary War on the colonists’ side, the French Navy recognized Jones’ great skill and placed him in command of a naval fleet in 1779. John Paul Jones and his fleet faced off with the British, and when they encountered the ship Serapis, the British taunted Jones and his men, asking if they wished to surrender. Rather than back down, Jones uttered one of the history’s most famous lines: “I have not yet begun to fight.”
Fight he did, too, as John Paul Jones engaged in battle with the Serapis and won, accepting England’s surrender on the sea. That victory solidified Jones’ place in history—but it wasn’t the end of his naval career. Once the Revolutionary War ended, he joined the Russian Navy and fought against the Turks. He spent the last years of his life in Paris, yet remained an American citizen. Today. John Paul Jones is still considered one of the great heroes of the U.S. Navy as its very first commander and American Revolution hero.
