A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
Alice, the Cheshire Cat, the Jabberwocky, the Hatter, the Dodo, the Dormouse—every one of these characters is beloved by children worldwide, all of whom know them from the wild, wacky, and somewhat nonsensical tales of Alice in Wonderland. These fantastical and fabulous characters were created by Lewis Carroll, an English writer who concocted his exciting, adventurous tales during the 19th century and the Victorian era.
Born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, the man who would later adopt the pen name Lewis Carroll was more than a mere writer. He was also a mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon, and photographer, a true jack of many trades. Yet his most famous career was that of the author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass. Though Carroll’s books are considered literary nonsense, his stellar wordplay, use of logic, and fantasy worlds made Alice an instant hit. When Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was first published in 1865, readers and critics alike adored the hidden meanings and unique ideas explored in Carroll’s writing. Adults adored its complexity, while children enjoyed its fantastical, unbelievable nature.
Today, Carroll is remembered as one of England’s great authors, his works celebrated and still read decades later. His incredible stories about Alice and her Wonderland friends have taken on a life of their own, turned into movies, television shows, and even theme park characters. New generations continue to adore the writings and fictional worlds of Lewis Carroll, and there’s always something new to discover hidden in his unusual yet beloved novels.
