George Washington, as the first president of the United States, is perhaps the most renowned and revered figure in our nation’s history. Yet while George Washington was a Commander in Chief and President unlike any other, he also had a woman who loved him dearly at his side: his wife, Martha Washington. Martha Washington may not have been an active political mind or influential advisor, but she was truly George’s right hand.

As America’s first First Lady, Martha Washington endured a great number of sacrifices during her lifetime. As a young woman, Martha married Daniel Parke Custis and had four children—only two survived to adulthood. At age 25, Martha was suddenly and unexpectedly a widow left to raise her children alone. Just two years later, George Washington walked into her life and began courting the new widow. In 1759, George and Martha married. With a wealthy fortune left behind by her late husband, Martha brought financial gain to George. Her money allowed the future president to increase his estate, buying land and slaves for Mount Vernon.

When the Revolutionary War broke out, Martha Washington joined the war effort by traveling to Valley Forge to spend the toughest days with her husband and his troops. Martha spent the years of the Continental Army’s encampment at Valley Forge traveling ten days and hundreds of miles from home to be with George. She lived in the encampment, always impeccably dressed and assertive in personality as though the war wouldn’t break her spirit. Once the Revolutionary War ended in victory, Martha opposed her husband’s decision to become president. In fact, she opposed so strongly she refused to attend his inauguration in 1789. Yet once in office, First Lady Martha Washington became an amicable host, welcoming guests and hosting state affairs in New York and Philadelphia through Washington’s presidency.

Throughout the 18th century a woman's dress usually consisted of a gown and petticoat. The gown consisted of the bodice and skirt joined together, with the skirt open in the front to reveal the separate petticoat.
