A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.

The individuals who made their mark in America and our nation’s Black History are filled with bravery, with courage, with determination unlike any other. Mary Touvestre, a seamstress, and former slave, showed her incredible boldness and grit during the Civil War of the 1800s. Touvestre, though free during the Civil War, chose to enter into service and give back to her country by becoming a spy for the Union. It was Mary Touvestre who helped stop the Confederate Navy from advancing, who worked with other Union spies to offer valuable information about the Confederacy’s movements.

Born in the Shenandoah Valley, Touvestre became a slave in her young teenage years. She was taught to sew and became a skilled seamstress on a small farm. When the Civil War broke out, Mary was between 55 and 70 years old—and fortune smiled upon her. Touvestre was able to purchase her freedom with money earned from her seamstress work. By July of 1861, she was working as a paid, free woman for an engineer in Norfolk’s Gosport Navy Yard. Touvestre overheard her boss bragging about the Confederate Navy’s newest ship: the CSS Virginia, which was being built to destroy the Union Navy. Mary decided to sneak into her employer’s office and trace the drawings of this new ironclad ship.

That single decision changed the course of the war for the Union and for Mary Touvestre. Mary was able to pass along her tracing of the ship plans thanks to the Underground Railroad, which helped her reach Union lines near Fredericksburg. She was then given a military escort to Washington, D.C. and offered employment with the Union Army. Mary turned that offer down, but the Union took advantage of her crucial information, using it to build their own ironclad ship (the USS Monitor) and protect the Union from the Confederate Navy at sea.
