A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
So many patriots were lost during America’s Revolutionary War fighting for the freedom of their new nation. Because independence from British rule was on the line, the soldiers of the revolution who enlisted with the brand new Continental Army were willing to conduct incredible feats of bravery in the face of certain danger and death. One such hero of the Revolutionary War was Nathan Hale, a colonist turned soldier who became remembered by history for his daring service.
Born in Connecticut in 1755, Nathan Hale was extraordinary as a young boy. At just 14 he studied at Yale, where he met future fellow patriot Benjamin Tallmadge. By age 18, Hale graduated from Yale with honors, one of the best students in his class. After graduation, Hale became a teacher in Connecticut and lived a quiet life. However, when the Revolutionary War broke out in 1775, Nathan Hale joined the Continental Army and became first lieutenant within just five months of service.
Nathan Hale proved a dedicated soldier immediately — and he even chose to volunteer for an intelligence-gathering mission in New York City. Hale went behind enemy lines to report on British troops’ movement, but he was recognized by the enemy despite his disguise. The British captured Hale and deemed his act of spying punishable by death. On the day of his hanging, Nathan Hale uttered famous last words: ”I only regret that I have but one life to give for my country." Hale has since been considered an American hero and, in 1985, he was officially designated the state hero of Connecticut.
