“Give me liberty, or give me death!” There is perhaps no phrase so familiar to Americans, no phrase that represents the colonists’ feelings about gaining their independence from the British monarchy, than these words by Patrick Henry. With these words, Henry vehemently opposed the Stamp Act 1765 and joined forces with Samuel Adams and Thomas Paine, making a triumvirate of men who became the most influential champions of the American Revolution and a fight for the new nation’s freedom.
Patrick Henry, a Founding Father, politician, patriot, and exceptional orator, moved countless individuals to join the American Revolution and stand up against British rule. Yet his origins were humble—before he swayed the course of the Thirteen Colonies, Henry tried to pursue a career as a planter. Unfortunately for Henry, but fortunately for America, his career failed miserably. Patrick Henry decided to instead try his hand at becoming a lawyer, and became a member of a local law firm.
As a lawyer, Patrick Henry suddenly found himself attached to cases that pitted colonists against the crown. His first prominent case, known as the “Parson’s Cause”, argued against the practice of allowing Britain to set taxes for the colonists. Henry continued to fight against the monarchy in similar cases, always standing strong in the belief that colonists should determine and control their own fate, their own governmental practices. Every speech Patrick Henry gave in court was impassioned—he quickly became famous for denouncing the British and making grand statements such as calling the Red Coats “enemies of the community” and “tyrants.” His most famous court quote came during debate over the Stamp Act, which Henry spoke against so strongly that some believed his words to be treason. Patrick Henry’s every word was so radical, so strongly willed, that colonists rallied around him and were encouraged to revolt.
