A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
There is perhaps no ride on horseback as well-known as that of Paul Revere’s through the Massachusetts countryside in the middle of the night in 1775. Though Paul Revere was a skilled silversmith, engraver, and early industrialist during the colonial era, his role as a Patriot during the American Revolution cemented his place in history. Revere was a central figure during the years leading up to the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, a prosperous and established Boston citizen and a renowned local business owner. Yet when he wasn’t creating crafts out of silver, Revere was helping to organize the resistance against the British—and he himself took part in the rebellion.
Paul Revere’s ride took place on April 18th, beginning around 10 PM after night had fallen. Revere and his fellow Boston-based patriots knew that the British were planning to arrive on the American shore and head into Massachusetts through the port of Boston. The men developed a plan: when the Red Coats landed onshore, Paul Revere and William Dawes would ride by horseback to nearby cities to warn citizens and mobilize the colonial town militias. Revere and Dawes would light lanterns to send a signal of the British troops’ movement.
As the British troops landed, Revere climbed on his horse and raced to Charlestown, the first place the Red Coats were headed. He continued to ride, crossing through the city after city and sending additional riders out from every Massachusetts town to warn others. By the end of Revere’s ride, 40 different riders were traveling through the colony to give their own warnings, all shouting Paul Revere’s words: “The Regulars are coming!”
