A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.

The figures of Greek mythology are unmatched in their power, their glory, and their incredible legends. From the all powerful Zeus to the beautiful Aphrodite to the strength of Hercules, the Greek gods are still revered by people in Greece and around the world thanks to stories so fantastical they’re almost history. One of the most indomitable figures in Greek Mythology is Perseus, a storied slayer of beasts and villains.

One of Zeus’ many sons, Perseus wasn’t a long-awaited child. When he was born, his mother’s father Acrisius of Argos cast Perseus into the sea — it had been predicted that Acrisius’ grandson would kill him, and he wanted to eliminate any chance of that occurring. However, Perseus survived. Misfortune befell the young god once again when he was tricked by King Polydectes of Seriphus, who made Perseus promise him Medusa’s head.

Though Perseus didn’t fully understand what he’d promised King Polydectes, he enlisted the help of Hermes and Athena to defeat Medusa. Together, the three gods faced Medusa. Perseus used Athena’s shield to deflect Medusa’s gaze, then killed her in her sleep. Perseus’ exploits didn’t end there, though. He’s said to have rescued, then married the Ethiopian princess Andromeda after killing Medusa. He gave Medusa’s head to Athena, killed his grandfather who once tried to kill Perseus, and is said to have founded Mycenae. Today, Perseus is remembered as a constellation in the night sky, where he can be seen alongside his wife Andromeda.
