A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.

During the American Revolution, countless colonists took up arms and squared off against the tyranny of British rule. Colonists got involved in any way they could — but for many African Americans, involvement just simply wasn’t possible. Prince Hall, however, wanted to change this fact.

Prince Hall was one of Boston’s most prominent citizens during the American Revolution. An African American and leader of the free black community in Boston, Hall worked tirelessly to get his fellow black citizens involved in the military, education, and Freemasonry. Free or enslaved, status didn’t matter to Prince Hall; he wanted every black American to have rights within their new country. Prince Hall came to found the African Lodge of the Honorable Society of Free and Accepted Masons of Boston, the world's first lodge of black Freemasonry and the first society in American history devoted to social, political, and economic improvement.

Beyond his work within the African American community, Prince Hall became involved in the Revolutionary War. It’s believed that Hall was one of the six black men of Massachusetts named Prince Hall listed in military records of the Revolutionary War, and he may well have fought at Bunker Hill. Of course, because few records regarding black citizens were kept during the 18th century, some historians debate Hall’s military service. Regardless, Prince Hall encouraged all enslaved and freed blacks to serve their new nation and enlist. He believed that if the black community got involved in the nation’s founding, they could attain their freedom. Once the Revolutionary War ended, Prince Hall turned his attention to fighting for equal rights. He took to hosting community events, such as educational forums and theatre events to improve the lives of black people, becoming a hero of a different right in Boston.

An exclusive piece in our Heritage Costumes Patriotic collection of quality costume clothing based on the Founding Fathers and renowned American patriots, this children’s Prince Hall costume is authentic to the 1700s and the attire worn by the Revolutionary War soldier and important colonist during the revolution and colonial era. You’ll look just like Hall himself when you don this historically accurate costume set. Included is a fully lined black colonial frock coat (also known as a colonial jacket), a matching vest (or colonial waistcoat) with an attached lace jabot, a pair of black colonial knee breeches, and lace cuffs.

Of course, every revolutionary and patriotic Bostonian needs a few accessories, too. Prince Hall made history wearing his attire with colonial socks and shoe buckles. If you’d like to enhance your attire with our Heritage Costume accessories (which are not included with the purchase of this costume), you can pair this costume outfit with these options from our wide selection of added details to create your very own personalized costume.

This high-quality Prince Hall costume can be used for historical school events, play, or simply a fun day of pretending to be a revolutionary supporting the Thirteen Colonies during the 18th century colonial era in America. Made with pride and care right in the United States, this kids’ Prince Hall patriotic costume is built to last.
