A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.

Revolutionary War uniforms worn by the Continental Army varied greatly in the early days of the war but eventually became standardized a few years in.  During the war, many officers wanted a way of distinguishing and featuring their commissioned rank. This led officers of military units to petition for the right to wear epaulettes, to ensure that their status would be recognized.

By the early 18th century, epaulettes had become the distinguishing feature of commissioned rank. And no ranking Revolutionary War officer's uniform is complete without displaying your rank with a pair of our Colonial Period Military Officers shoulder boards (epaulets).

From the 18th century on, epaulettes were used in the military to indicate rank. The rank of an officer could be determined by whether an epaulette was worn on the left shoulder, the right shoulder or on both.
