Robert E. Lee is a name well known to Americans thanks to the Civil War. The general, a historic military figure from Virginia, commanded the Confederate Army from 1862 to 1865—but Robert E. Lee was a military hero long before the North and South met on the battlefield during the 19th century. A top graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, a renowned officer who fought in the Mexican-American War, and a skilled military engineer, Lee served his country for 32 years during his lifetime.

Robert E. Lee became involved in the American Civil War immediately. When Virginia declared its secession in 1861, Lee sided with his home state—yet Lee strongly wished that the young country wouldn’t find itself divided or at war. Lee’s dedication to Virginia led him to become a senior military advisor to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Within one year, Lee was commanding the main Confederate army units, proving to be a shrewd tactician, aggressive strategist, and battlefield winner. At the beginning of the Civil War, Lee’s military skill led the Confederate Army to multiple victories again the Union Army.

Unfortunately, Robert E. Lee ran out of luck when his aggressive war tactics collided with shortages of manpower, supplies, and advantages in the South. On April 9, 1865, Lee surrendered the Confederate Army to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House. With the Civil War at its end, Lee turned his attention to supporting President Andrew Johnson’s Reconstruction and trying to unite the angry South with the North. Long after the Civil War, Robert E. Lee is still celebrated as the great Confederate hero of the War, an icon of what some call the “Lost Cause of the Confederacy.” His legacy is celebrated, too, by the North, with memorial barracks built in his honor at West Point and his name in the stories of American history.
