A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
While those recognized as the Founding Fathers are often also associated with the signers of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, there’s one Founding Father who managed to make history without ever signing a single founding document: Robert Livingston. A skilled lawyer, politician, diplomat, and Founding Father, Robert Livingston was an important member of the New York colony both before and after the Revolutionary War. Livingston was a member of the Committee of Five, the group of men who drafted the Declaration of Independence. Together, Livingstone, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Roger Sherman crafted the document that would separate the colonies from the crown.
Yet when the time came to sign and send the Declaration of Independence, Robert Livingston was the only member of the committee who didn’t sign the document. Instead, he sent his cousin Philip Livingston to sign in his place. Later, upon the Constitution’s completion, Livingston again sent a stand-in to sign for him. After the revolution era, Livingston became known as “The Chancellor”, holding the high New York state legal office of Chancellor for 25 years. He remained active in the federal government, though, even administering the very first presidential oath to George Washington in New York City. In the first years of the 19th century, Robert Livingston negotiated the Louisiana Purchase. Upon its signing in 1803, Livingston recognized the impact his career made for the new nation, remarking, “We have lived long but this is the noblest work of our whole lives ... The United States take rank this day among the first powers of the world.”
