A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.

While all of the Founding Fathers were important and had a hand in the America we know today, only one of these men signed every one of the great state papers that formed the county. That Father was Roger Sherman.

Born in Newton, Massachusetts in 1721, Roger Sherman grew up in a quiet town outside of Boston. It wasn’t until his adult life, after graduating from Yale, that he began a career in government while living in Connecticut. As a member of the colony’s general assembly, Sherman was elected to the Continental Congress in 1774. While at the Congress, and later the Constitutional Convention, Sherman was one of the most influential and outspoken members to participate.

That active nature led to Roger Sherman’s involvement with every major founding document. Sherman helped to draft the Declaration of Independence, and he signed every one of the state papers that followed: the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. Later in his life, Roger Sherman continued to work in government, becoming the first mayor of New Haven, a member of the House of Representatives, and a member of the Senate. He earned recognition from all around him — but perhaps most telling of Roger Sherman’s impact was the following statement by Thomas Jefferson, who said, "That is Mr. Sherman, of Connecticut, a man who never said a foolish thing in his life.”

An exclusive piece in our Heritage Costumes Patriotic collection of quality costume clothing based on the Founding Fathers, this children’s Roger Sherman costume is authentic to the 1700s and the attire worn by the colonist during the revolution and colonial era. You’ll look just like Sherman himself when you don this historically accurate costume set. Included is a fully lined black colonial frock coat (also known as a colonial jacket), a black vest (or colonial waistcoat) with an attached lace jabot, a pair of matching colonial knee breeches, and lace cuffs.

Of course, every revolutionary Congressman needs a few accessories, too. Roger Sherman made history wearing his attire with a traditional wig, colonial socks, and shoe buckles. If you’d like to enhance your attire with our Heritage Costume accessories (which are not included with the purchase of this costume), you can pair this costume outfit with these options from our wide selection of added details to create your very own personalized costume.

This high-quality Roger Sherman costume can be used for historical school events, play, or simply a fun day of pretending to be a member of the Continental Congress during the 18th century colonial era in America.
