A gladiator (Latin: gladiator, "swordsman," from gladius, "sword") was an armed combatant who entertained audiences in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. Some gladiators were volunteers who risked their legal and social standing and their lives by appearing in the arena. Military helmets date from ancient times. Their basic function was to protect the head, face, and sometimes the neck from projectiles and the cutting blows of swords, spears, arrows, and other weapons.
Helmets, armor, and some swords will often come coated in oil when you receive them. The oil helps to prevent rust and tarnishing while shipping the item. This is a good way to protect item when not in use, but you don't want to get oil all over you when you are using it.
How to clean off the oil
The best way to remove this oil is using lacquer thinner to clean it off than letting it air dry. You can then test it with a cotton cloth to see if you've gotten off all of the oil. You are now ready to use your item!
Storing your item
Since helmets, armor, and swords that are not made from stainless steel are prone to rust, it is recommended that you re-coat the item if you are going to store it for any extended amount of time. A coat of WD-40 should work well. There are also sword oils which you can buy that work for longer because they are made to not dry out as WD-40 does after a while.
