The Roman Empire set so many of the standards for the world today, from the gold standard to city water supplies to governmental structures. But life in Ancient Rome wasn’t solely an experience of progress and innovation. Some of the practices of Ancient Rome’s society were downright barbaric — and one in particular offered fame and glory alongside slavery and death.

Roman gladiators were the professional fighters of Ancient Rome. Unlike today’s boxing matches and UFC fights, however, gladiator fights were violent and brutal, bloody and unbelievable. And the men who became gladiators were most often slaves. Gladiators fought to the death, attempting to defend both their life and the glory of their ludus, or school. Wealthy Roman citizens would own a ludus that took slaves or criminals caught throughout the empire and turned them into bloodthirsty fighters. Those gladiators would then fight in exhibitions held at huge amphitheaters, entertaining the crowds with their blood sport. If a gladiator won, he often continued fighting for victory — but some were granted their freedom.

When gladiators took to the arena for fights, they were distinguished from one another by what kinds of armor they wore. Gladiators, like the Roman people, came from different classes. The Samnites fought with large shields, plumed helmets, and short swords. Thracian gladiators, like the famed Spartacus, carried a small, round shield and a dagger. Mirmillones from Gaul donned a helmet, sword, and shield. Some gladiators wore nothing but a tunic and carried no weapons.

An exclusive piece in our Heritage Costumes collection of quality costume clothing, this adult Roman gladiator costume is authentic to the clothing of the ancient world and the attire worn by gladiators who entered Rome’s most famous arenas. You’ll look just like the storied gladiators Spartacus and Scipio Africanus when you don this historically accurate costume. To capture the look of gladiators’ traditional attire accurately, this costume includes a white polyester Roman under-tunic with detailed metallic trim at the bottom, a silver-trimmed adjustable black vinyl chest plate with an attached lightweight Roman dark grey cape, a latex shoulder guard and, a pair of matching wrist guards. You’ll look the part of any gladiator battling for his life with this costume straight out of Ancient Rome.

Please note that this costume is designed to be a low-use costume — it is not intended for LARP or historical reenactments. The chest plate and body armor offer no protection from actual role play.

This high-quality Roman gladiator costume can be used for a period ball, historical reenactment, masquerade, or simply experiencing a day in the life of a skilled fighter in the arena living centuries ago. Made with pride and care right in the United States, this adult Roman gladiator costume is built to last.
